Do you look the cashier in the Eye?

You Were the Sunshine

My girlfriend asked me lately, if I would look the cashier of the supermarket in the eye when paying. I said “of course I do”. I checked that back the following weeks and found that I watched the cashier when he/she was still busy with another customer, but I didn’t look him/her in the eye when it was my turn. Instead, I was focussed on getting my purchases back in the shopping cart and somehow took the person taking my money for granted, like a machine doing a mechanical job.

After all, the cashier is no machine, so don’t treat them as one. You wouldn’t want to be seen as a job-fullfilling machine either, no matter if your job is rather mechanical or if you imagine your job is better than that. Someone else will always look down to what you do – at least your boss might think your job’s all pretty easy and mechanical to do. Therefore I tried to change my behaviour now. People you interfere with should never be taken for granted.
